Asbestos removal in Gatton

Class B licensed asbestos removal and testing in Gatton and the Lockyer Valley, about 35 km from East Toowoomba. Call (07) 3185 2323 to book.

We carry out asbestos removal in Gatton and across the Lockyer Valley. Gatton is about 35 km by road from our base at 1 Margaret St, East Toowoomba, and the drive is roughly half an hour.

Gatton is a different council area

Gatton is the seat of the Lockyer Valley Region. It is in Lockyer Valley Regional Council, not Toowoomba Regional Council. About 7,900 people lived in Gatton at the 2021 census, and the settlement was gazetted in 1855.

This matters mostly for waste. Toowoomba Regional Council runs the Wellcamp facility that takes domestic asbestos from its own residents. Gatton asbestos goes through the Lockyer Valley council instead.

Disposal in the Lockyer Valley

The Gatton Transfer Station and Landfill on Fords Road is listed in a national directory as taking residential asbestos. Entry is for residents only, with proof of residence and prior approval from the council, on weekdays. Sources disagree on the weight limit and the fee, so we will not quote either. Contact Lockyer Valley Regional Council before you load anything, and ask what the current limits and charges are.

Commercial loads and builders have extra waste tracking duties. You can read the detail in our guide to asbestos waste rules for businesses and builders.

If you hire us, we wrap, transport and dispose of the waste, so you do not have to arrange approval yourself. See our page on asbestos disposal.

What we can do in Gatton

Our contractors hold a Class B licence. That covers non-friable (bonded) asbestos such as cement sheeting. We can help with:

  • Asbestos removal from roofs, walls, fences and sheds.
  • Asbestos testing of materials before you renovate or buy.
  • Strip outs of older buildings where asbestos has to come out first.
  • Clean-up and site clean after the work.

Friable material, for example fire-damaged asbestos, needs a Class A licensed removalist. We will tell you if your job is in that group.

Urgent clean-up after floods or storms

A class exemption runs from 16 March 2023 to 15 March 2028. It lets licensed removalists start urgent removal after flooding or severe weather without the usual five days' notice. They file the notification as soon as practicable afterwards. It does not cover work done months after the event, such as insurance claim work.

If a storm has damaged asbestos, read storm and hail damaged asbestos and call us.

Our paperwork

We prepare the Asbestos Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) and carry $20 million public liability insurance. You get a clearance certificate when the job is finished. The inspection behind it is done by an independent assessor or competent person.

We have no confirmed information on the age of Gatton's housing. Use the standard test. Buildings from before 1990 are likely to contain some asbestos, so test first.

Rules change. Check the current rules at asbestos.qld.gov.au.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Gatton in the Toowoomba council area?

No. Gatton is in Lockyer Valley Regional Council. Waste rules and fees there come from that council.

Can I take Gatton asbestos to Wellcamp?

Wellcamp is run by Toowoomba Regional Council for its own residents, so do not assume it is open to you. Ask the Lockyer Valley council which site to use.

How far is Gatton from East Toowoomba?

About 35 km by road, and roughly half an hour. Other sources give a different figure because the route and starting point differ.

Is urgent storm removal treated differently?

For licensed removalists, there is a temporary exemption from the five day notice after flooding or severe weather. Notification is still required, just afterwards.
