Call (07) 3185 2323Asbestos disposal in Toowoomba is not like getting rid of normal building rubble. In Queensland, asbestos waste is regulated waste. It has to be wrapped, labelled, moved safely and taken to a site approved to accept it. Get any of those steps wrong and fibres can end up in the air, and you can end up on the wrong side of the law.
This page is the overview. The guides it links to cover each step in more detail.
What counts as asbestos waste
It is more than the sheets themselves. Broken pieces and offcuts count. So do the drop sheets, wipes, tape and disposable coveralls used on the job. Dust and debris from taking out bonded asbestos is not friable asbestos, but it is still asbestos waste and has to be disposed of properly.
The rules that apply to everyone
- Never put asbestos in a household bin.
- Never reuse, recycle, store, sell, give away or dump it.
- Double wrap it in 0.2 mm plastic, seal it with tape and label it.
- Take it to a site that is approved and licensed to accept asbestos.
The other option is a plastic-lined industrial skip from a waste contractor that holds the right environmental authority for regulated waste transport.
Rules change, so check the current requirements at asbestos.qld.gov.au.
Taking it to the tip yourself
Toowoomba Regional Council takes domestic asbestos at the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility on O'Mara Road, Wellcamp. It is for households only, up to 175 kg per visit, and commercial asbestos is not accepted. Call the council on 131 872 before you go, and ask what the current fee is.
Our guide to where to dispose of asbestos in Toowoomba covers hours, conditions and a rule change that starts on 1 November 2026.
Packaging matters as much as the destination. Read how to wrap and transport asbestos in Queensland before you load anything. If your job is small, removing small amounts of asbestos explains the 10 m² rule.
When you should not do it yourself
A homeowner can remove 10 m² or less of bonded (non-friable) asbestos if they follow the safety rules. Above that, you need a certificate or a licensed removalist.
Friable asbestos is never a homeowner job. That includes pipe lagging, sprayed insulation, and material that is crumbling or fire damaged. It needs a Class A licensed removalist. If you think you have friable material, stop and call us to talk it through.
How we handle disposal
Disposal and waste transport are part of what we do. Our contractors hold a Class B licence, which covers non-friable asbestos only. We prepare the Asbestos Safe Work Method Statement for the job, and we carry $20 million in public liability insurance.
When the work is finished, you get a clearance certificate. The clearance inspection behind it is done by an independent assessor or competent person, not by the removalist.
Businesses and builders
Commercial loads follow different rules. Waste tracking applies to commercial operators carrying any amount of asbestos waste, and the Wellcamp facility does not take commercial asbestos. Our guide to asbestos waste rules for businesses and builders explains the paperwork.
Dumped or leftover asbestos
Found old sheets behind the shed, or dumped material on your block? Do not move it or break it up. Our guide on illegal asbestos dumping explains what to do next.
If the asbestos is still part of a building, start with asbestos removal in Toowoomba. Removal and disposal go hand in hand.

FAQ
Asbestos Disposal questions
Can I put asbestos in my wheelie bin or an ordinary skip?
No. Asbestos must never go in a household bin. It needs to be double wrapped and sealed, then taken to an approved site, or collected in a plastic-lined industrial skip from a contractor authorised to carry regulated waste.
Does it cost money to dispose of asbestos?
A fee applies at the council facility. The council's page does not state the amount, so ring Toowoomba Regional Council on 131 872 and ask for the current fee before you go.
What happens to asbestos after it leaves my property?
It has to go to a site that is approved and licensed to take asbestos. It cannot be reused, recycled or stored. The details of the destination depend on who is carrying it and how much there is.
Do I have to use a licensed removalist to dispose of asbestos?
Not for 10 m² or less of bonded asbestos at a home, as long as you follow the safety rules. Over 10 m², or for anything friable, you need a licensed removalist. Call us if you are not sure which side of the line your job is on.
