About Pittsworth

Pittsworth is a rural town of about 3,300 people, south-west of Toowoomba, in the Toowoomba Regional Council area. The railway arrived in 1877, so the town has a long history.

We have no confirmed data on housing age in Pittsworth, so we do not make claims about its streets. Instead, we treat any building from before 1990 as a possible asbestos site until a lab says otherwise.

Jobs we are asked about

Asbestos cement was commonly used on houses, sheds, carports and fences. These are the usual jobs:

Our contractors hold a Class B licence for bonded asbestos. Material that is friable needs a Class A licensed removalist, and we will tell you straight if your job falls into that group.

Other work we do

Our asbestos removal service covers roofs, fences, sheds, floors and wall sheeting. If a building is coming down or being gutted, strip outs and demolition deals with the asbestos first, before anything else is pulled apart.

After the removal, the work area still has to be left safe. That is covered by asbestos decontamination and site clean. Dust and debris must be cleaned up before anyone moves back in. The job ends with a clearance inspection by an independent person, so you have it in writing.

It is worth planning the order of work early. Test first, remove next, clean last. When you call, we can walk through that order for your property.

The 10 m2 rule

A homeowner can remove 10 m2 or less of bonded asbestos without a certificate, as long as they follow the safety steps. That is about four sheets of cement wall sheeting. The whole job counts, so you cannot split it over several days to stay under the limit.

Over 10 m2, you need a certificate or a licensed contractor. Sheds and long fences can go past 10 m2 quickly. Our guide to removing small amounts of asbestos goes through the rule.

Disposal near Pittsworth

The council's Pittsworth Waste Management Facility appears in a national directory as taking residential asbestos, but we have not been able to confirm that this is current. Call Toowoomba Regional Council on 131 872 and ask before you load anything.

The option we can confirm is the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility at 270 O'Mara Road, Wellcamp. It takes wrapped domestic asbestos only, up to 175 kg a visit, and no commercial loads. When we do the removal, we deal with the waste for you. More at asbestos disposal.

Our process

We prepare the Asbestos Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) and hold $20 million public liability insurance. When the job is done, you get a clearance certificate. An independent assessor or competent person carries out the inspection, not us.

Rules change. Check the current rules at asbestos.qld.gov.au.
